Nightmares on Wax is one of the most influential dub trip hop producers from the UK but he is originally from the island of Ibiza. Nightmares On wax first hit the scene in the 90’s with the album “A word of science: The First Final Chapter” and has been producing albums ever since. The most recent is called “Feeling Good” released through Warp Records. The album strives to capture a positive energy, bringing a new age of funk sample based music. I recently had the chance to capture these good vibes at the El Rey theatre in Los Angeles during Nightmares on Wax’s “Feeling Good Tour”.
I first walked into the venue and noticed that it was a very elegant setting to hold a concert. The walls are velvet colored, the ceiling holds massive chandeliers that change colors with the music, and this added an element of elegance and a feeling of upper class. Right away the setting encourages a great feeling of relaxed and positive energy. I noticed most of the audience was in their 30’s it was a more relaxed crowd. Nightmares on Wax has been active since the early 90’s so it did not surprise me that the crowd was older and more mature.
The opening act was DJ Aroon Bird who was a bit disappointing. His track selection varied from hip hop to world sounds but it was a bit random. Even though he selected good tracks, his mixing was a little rough. At the end of his set the red curtains were drawn without warning, Arron Bird didn’t even introduce himself. This is disappointing set from a DJ who is supposed to be energizing the crowd before the main show.
Around 10:00pm Nightmares on Wax came out and opened with the song “Now is The Time” which is a single for the new album. The crowd was pumped, Nightmares on Wax who I thought was only one DJ has reinvented himself and now has a live band. The band members include three singers, who all have different voice ranges, a live drummer and a live percussionist. They came out in full effect, hyping the crowd up and giving out all good vibrations.
I enjoyed the fact that Nightmares on Wax now has a full band, this ads an element of live instruments to their performance, other than just having some turntables and a DJ. The singers all had their own time to shine having songs specifically for their voice range and displaying all their singing abilities to their full potential. The vibe was right, N.O.W advocated love and peace through the show. The mood was positive all night long N.O.W played most of their new album “Feeling Good” and some reinvented classics like “You Wish” and “Smokers Delight”.
The energy was high through the whole set, everyone was feeling the dance floor and the feel good vibrations all around them. Overall the show was one for the books and one of the best live performances I have seen this year. Pick up the newly released Nightmares on wax album “Feeling Good” on Warp Records.
