Portugal. The Man @ The Glasshouse 4-18-13

CAM00049
Hailing from Wasilla Alaska Portugal. The Man is one of the busiest bands in the last seven years. Portugal. The Man has consistently released CD’s since 2006. They’ve pump out one album, every year, for the past 7 years. They are due to release a new album called “Evil Friends” produced by Danger mouse, on June 4 2013. This collaboration gives Portugal. The Man a whole new original sound. I recently caught Portugal. The Man at The Glasshouse in Pomona and they were better than when I saw them at other venues. Even though I’ve seen this band three times, you never know how a live performance will affect the audience.

The vibe was mellow at first, because most of the audience was in their early twenty’s this show was a little more mellow than most shows at the glasshouse.  Lord Huron was the opening act and they set up the vibe for the rest of the night. With their indie folk sound, Lord Huron opened with high energy and sweet melodies.  After Lord Huron finished their set, Portugal. The Man took to the stage.

Portugal. The Man opened their set with a new song called “Evil Friends” which brought high energy to the stage right from the start. The crowd was smaller than what I’ve seen at other venues, so this show felt really up close and personal with the audience. Portugal’s set was accompanied with a light show created by orb-like lights hanging from the ceiling and rising from the stage. The orbs changed color with the pace and downbeats of the songs. This kept the energy level high during every song! Even though Portugal. The Man has over 100 songs in their portfolio; they decided to keep their set list focused on their most recent releases.

The crowd sang along with every lyric from recent albums but also seemed to really vibe off their new releases as well. Even though the new album has not been released some of the audience already knew the lyrics. What surprised me the most during Portugal’s set is that they played 3 covers. They covered two Beatles songs these included “Hey Jude” and “Helter Skelter” .The third cover was a song by Weezer called “Say it aint so”. Their ending was even more powerful than their beginning. Portugal. The Man closed out with “Helter Skelter”, one of the most energetic closing songs I have ever seen. Even though I’ve seen Portugal. The Man before, their live performance never seizes to surprise me.  Be sure to pick up the new Portugal. The Man album titled “Evil Friends” on June 4.

Sunday March 30th marked the restart of Droog’s finest dance meet-up at the Standard Hotel Rooftop in Downtown LA. The 3-man DJ crew have been putting on their very own Culprit Sessions at the Standard Rooftop on select Sundays for sometime now, and this time round they invited the prolific Leeds, England DJ and producer, Miguel Campbell. This was my first time attending a Culprit Sessions party on the breathtaking Stantdard Rooftop and it was definitely an experience for the books.

The 3 guys of Droog were joined by Culprit member, Clovis, and each seamlessly took turns spinning on the decks and kept the bpm at a lovely body moving rhythm. You can’t help but to feed off the atmosphere of the wonderful environment The Standard rooftop creates as well as the different walks of life Culprit Sessions aggregates on to their outdoor dancefloor. The weather was gloomy throughout the day with some small outbreaks of rain, despite the wet weather the party still went on. It was nothing but good vibrations traveling through the speakers, everything seemed at ease and nothing felt out of control.

The Droog dudes know how to keep their cool as well as throw a solid party. It was deep-house on the roof with a bunch of Easter Sunday party-groovers that weren’t ready to stop moving their bodies or bopping their heads. I heard some of the finest underground sounds around, from lounging deep-house to subtle techno to some groovy funk and every sound in between. Miguel Campbell took on the decks later on within the day and without a doubt tore up the dancefloor with some exquisitely crafted dance numbers that turned up the levels of liveliness on the roof even more than Droog had left it.

techno ask me how

Its a highly suggested party for anyone that likes to hear underground dance music in the middle of the day in the heart of downtown LA on a freaking rooftop. It doesnt get much better than that. Get a recap of what I experienced that on that Sunday over at Culprit’s youtube page…

Also : Sunday May 19th, Culprit Sessions returns on the Standard Rooftop with a whole new bill of artists. Check out the flyer below and find further info on the event here

TIR Spring 2013 DJ Mixer

TIR Spring mixer 2013

It’s not just a student run university radio station. It’s a place that knows good music and how to have a good time. Being at the station, as a DJ, you get to see who Titan Radio really is: just a bunch of friendly music enthusiasts that take the time to put on quality events. Whether they are just making an appearance at another event or hosting an event of their own, they make the listening space an interesting one. The best way to get to know what Titan Radio is all about is at their DJ Mixers. I’m telling you: good people, good jams and good vibes.

They even provide food! You just gotta show up. They put up flyers in advance all over campus and online, so you’ll hear about it again. There have only been a few mixers so far, but they are picking up speed.

BOARDWALKPIC

Since Boardwalk Burgers recently sponsored them, free burgers and drinks were given out at the last mixer. Not to mention there was a giant projector screen rotating interesting visuals and fresh music sets to match. Music was provided by LO.Qi., Let It Ring, That’s Deck, Forensic Electric, and Austro Audio. The images had my eyes in a trance and sounds had my head bobbing. Plus there was a couple guys break dancing. That was sort of wild. But it wasn’t super packed. It had just the right amount of people to give you breathing room and an opportunity to meet new friends. I suspect the success of the last TIR DJ mixer will give way to a larger participation for the next time.

BEYOND WONDERLAND REVIEW

Beyond Wonderland.

Its one of those concerts that envelopes your Facebook news feed and turns out to be all you hear about for weeks before, and weeks after.

Well, it isn’t without reason. I got the chance to go to Beyond Wonderland this year, and can say without hesitation that it is named properly. Being at this festival, on the beautiful, hilly grounds of the San Manuel Amphitheater (formerly Glen Helen Pavilion), you truly feel that you have entered a land that is BEYOND wonder.

The grounds featured really interesting, colorful installation art pieces, lantern-filled trees and entrancing entertainers. There were plenty of places to grab a cold beverage or relieve yourself of said beverage. At 4pm, People in colorful costumes flooded the gates, and the music began to blare.

Tutu-clad girls and top-hat-wearing men made their way across the fields to various stages, all of them giant and back-lit by an array of colorful, shifting lights. As the musicians traded spots throughout the night, the crowds grew steadily bigger, and the enthusiastic hype of the rave-goers  grew steadily louder! The entire festival was buzzing with jumping, dancing, playful people, clearly enjoying every ‘drop’ and bump coming from the speakers surrounding them.

Eventually of course, it grew dark; however, Beyond Wonderland could not have been more alive. Everyone was in character, whether it was the Cheshire Cat, the White Rabbit, or the Queen of Hearts, there was no avoiding the positive energy.

Crizzly, Steve Angello, Arty, W&W, David Guetta, Afrojack, Bassjackers, Dash Berlin, R3hab, and Chuckie were some of the favorites, to name ONLY a few.

The music was bumping until 2am, at which time everyone made their way home, looking fully satisfied, and fully exhuasted after a long day and night of going down the rabbit hole.

Needless to say, I, and the hundreds of others who enjoyed Beyond Wonderland 2013, will return next year for another round of musical bliss.

We hope to see you there ;)
